How Stairs and Elevators Affect Moving Time and Cost

Plan for stairs, elevator reservations, loading areas and walking distance so your Jacksonville-area moving estimate reflects real building access.

A second-floor apartment with a reserved service elevator can be a different job from a second-floor apartment reached through a narrow stairwell. The floor number alone does not describe the route. JEM needs the path from the parked truck to the item at both pickup and delivery.

Describe stairs as an actual route

Report flights at each property, outdoor steps, tight turns, landings and unusual restrictions. Photographs help the office understand access, but give context: which door, which floor and which furniture must pass through. A single photograph of an empty staircase does not describe an oversized desk's route.

Do not assume an elevator eliminates all stairs. There may be steps between the street and lobby or between the elevator and the unit.

Reserve the right elevator and loading access

Ask building management which elevator may be used, how to reserve it, whether protective coverings are required and whether other residents share it. Confirm the actual reservation window and who can provide access. Include loading-dock instructions and any building documentation requests in your moving plan.

Check destination arrangements too. A useful pickup reservation cannot prevent a delivery delay caused by a locked loading bay or an unavailable elevator.

Account for the walk

Tell JEM about parking setbacks, long corridors, courtyards and remote garages. A short distance between addresses can still involve a long carry at each end. A gated Jacksonville Beach condo or a larger Ponte Vedra property may need detailed access notes even when the mileage is small.

Keep walking routes clear, but do not reserve public space or block traffic without the appropriate permission. Confirm parking arrangements with the building or relevant authority.

Read access charges alongside labor time

The live planner includes separate stairs and elevator allowances, and a long-carry calculation when applicable. Access can also increase the time required to handle the shipment. An allowance and actual hourly labor are separate parts of the estimate; ask the office to explain both rather than assuming one makes the other disappear.

For specialty pieces, the handling method may need a survey and custom review. Do not attempt a difficult route merely because ordinary boxes fit through it.

Enter both locations accurately in the JEM planner and review the written scope before booking. Use our team-leader questions for the arrival walkthrough, when the crew can compare the planned route with the property.
