The Night Before Moving Day: A Ready-for-the-Crew Checklist

Get ready for moving day with a practical checklist for cartons, access, personal essentials, furniture notes and the information your moving crew needs.

The night before a move is a useful deadline for decisions, not just packing. The crew needs to know what travels, how to reach it and where it belongs. A home with a clear plan is easier to work through than one where every item still needs a conversation.

Use this checklist after reviewing the scope of your JEM moving plan. If a task is unfinished, tell the office rather than assuming the crew has time or materials to absorb it.

Finish the boxes that are part of the moving load

Close cartons securely, label their destination rooms and check for weak bases, open tops and items protruding from the sides. Keep heavy contents in manageable cartons. Identify any box that needs repacking instead of hiding it among finished ones. Packing materials and additional packing labor should be discussed before arrival. A truck-ready inventory is different from a room full of possessions waiting to be packed.

Separate the items that are staying

Create a clearly marked area for belongings you will carry yourself, items staying with the property and anything awaiting another arrangement. Tell the crew leader how those groups are identified. Remove visual ambiguity: a bag of clothing for donation should not look identical to a bag meant for the truck. If disposal, donation pickup or an additional stop is part of the job, confirm it in the scope.

Confirm entry and the carrying route

Check keys, gate instructions, parking arrangements and any elevator reservation. Clear the agreed path through the home without attempting heavy or unfamiliar lifting. Identify steps, narrow turns and surfaces needing attention. Tell the office if the route has changed since the estimate. An unavailable elevator or a different truck location can change the work even when the item count stays the same.

Put furniture instructions in one place

List pieces needing disassembly, reassembly or special handling. Keep available manufacturer information and labeled hardware accessible. Record existing damage or fragile features you want the team to review. Do not take apart unfamiliar structures simply to appear ready. Ask about the work that was agreed, especially for a piano, safe, pool table or another specialty item that needs its own handling review.

Pack the personal travel group

Keep identification, important documents, medication, keys, small valuables, chargers and practical first-night supplies with you. Include the needs of children or pets in your own travel arrangements. Label this group so it does not enter the shipment accidentally. Keep moving documents and the office contact available. A phone buried in a sealed carton cannot help you coordinate access at the destination.

Prepare the first conversation with the crew

Choose the person who will meet the team and approve questions within the agreed scope. Have a short list of inventory changes, access concerns and destination instructions ready. Plan a walkthrough before loading begins. If you need someone dedicated to coordinating the full move, ask about the $750 JEM moving coordinator service when booking rather than assuming it is included.

A final check is most useful when it identifies the unfinished work honestly. Contactar a JEM with material changes before the visit so the crew and written plan can be reviewed.
