Your Moving Essentials Bag and First-Night Box

Separate the belongings you keep with you from the first-night supplies delivered with your move, including documents, chargers, bedding and daily necessities.

Not every important item belongs in the same carton. Some things must remain in your possession throughout the day. Others can travel with the household load but should be easy to find when it arrives. Planning these two groups prevents the common problem of needing something that is already behind a truckload of furniture.

Keep personal essentials under your control

Set aside identification, keys, necessary documents, medication and other items you cannot comfortably be without. Include phone chargers, essential contact numbers and the information needed to enter the destination property. Follow appropriate storage requirements for medication and sensitive items.

Decide who is responsible for this bag. Put it in a clearly separate place and tell the crew it is excluded from the shipment. Do not leave valuables, cash or irreplaceable records in an ordinary carton simply because that carton is marked “important.”

Build a modest first-night box

Choose supplies that let the household settle in before full unpacking: basic toiletries, toilet paper, a few towels, a change of clothes, bedding and a small set of everyday dishes. Keep it manageable. Adding every potentially useful item turns an essentials box into another mixed carton.

Pack liquids carefully and discuss restricted items with JEM. Food, cleaning products, aerosols, batteries and other contents may need special decisions; a familiar household item is not automatically suitable for the moving load.

Plan for children, pets and delayed access

A child's comfort item or the supplies needed for a pet should not depend on immediate truck access. Keep necessary care items with the responsible adult. If you will stay overnight elsewhere, pack for that interval rather than assuming unloading will finish exactly when hoped.

Arrange a safe place for children and pets away from the moving route. First-night planning also means knowing who can answer the crew while someone else handles household needs.

Tell the team how to identify it

Label the delivery box with its destination and “open first.” Discuss practical access to it with the team leader; load order still depends on safe truck loading and the rest of the inventory. At delivery, place it where it will be useful without obstructing pathways.

Use the night-before checklist to separate these groups before arrival. For a move involving storage or a long delivery interval, describe those dates in your JEM plan so essentials are planned around the actual journey.
