What Items Will Moving Companies Not Move?

Check hazardous, unsafe and improperly prepared items before moving. Understand JEM refusal terms and when unusual contents need a specific acceptance review.

Moving companies may refuse hazardous, leaking, unsafe or improperly prepared items. Disclose fuels, gas cylinders, some paints, chemicals, aerosols, ammunition and other unusual contents before packing. Acceptance depends on the item, carrier, route and service; a general online list is not permission to load something onto JEM's truck.

Start with JEM's actual preparation terms

JEM's packing and handling terms reserve the right to refuse unsafe, hazardous, loose, poorly packed, leaking, overweight or otherwise improperly prepared items. Ask the office about an uncertain item before moving day. Provide its name, condition, dimensions or weight where relevant and any manufacturer information requested.

Ordinary furniture can also need review when its condition or route makes handling unsafe. An acceptance decision concerns the actual piece and access, not only the category written on an inventory list.

Check household products that may be hazardous

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Check the Box guide identifies common hazardous materials, including fuels, some aerosols, paints, batteries and pool chemicals. Household familiarity does not make a product an ordinary moving-carton item.

Do not conceal these contents among clothes or kitchen boxes. Follow the office's acceptance process and the relevant product and transport guidance. This article does not provide packaging approval or a procedure for transporting hazardous goods yourself.

Separate essentials, valuables and items needing special arrangements

Keep necessary medication, identification, keys, important records and personal essentials under your control. Ask before including plants, perishable food, unusual batteries or other contents that may need route-specific decisions. Arrange suitable transport and care for pets rather than treating them as household cargo.

A safe is also different from its contents. Ask about the safe's weight, access and preparation, and separately disclose any restricted contents for review. Do not assume that approval to handle a safe approves everything stored inside it.

Give heavy and delicate pieces a proper review

Tell JEM about a piano, pool table, hot tub, large safe or unusually fragile object while building the quote. Share measurements, access photographs and the requested disassembly or setup. The office may need to confirm staffing, equipment, preparation or separate specialist work.

Do not attempt hazardous preparation or heavy handling to make an item “ready.” Ask what work JEM can perform and which tasks need another qualified provider.

Make the decision visible to the crew

Keep excluded items separate and clearly identify what stays. Record agreed handling instructions in the move plan rather than relying on a last-minute conversation. If contents or conditions change, notify the office before loading.

Use the night-before checklist, review protection and customer responsibilities, and include uncertain items in your JEM quote request. An informed review before arrival is more useful than a surprise refusal at the door.
